An evening reception will be held at Florian Hall on Sat., May 31 to help raise money to support an ongoing restoration project at St. Margaret’s Church on Columbia Road.

Funds raised through the event’s $100 tickets will go toward restoring eight large stained-glass windows on the side of the nave and the smaller stained-glass windows near the church’s front entrance.

“There’s an effort underway to restore all the stained-glass windows at St. Margaret’s Church, an important part of the Catholic community in Dorchester,” said Annissa Essaibi-George, who is supporting the effort.

“We know that in Dorchester especially, our parishes are synonymous with our neighborhoods, regardless of your religion.”

“Part of the effort is not just the restoration of the stained glass but the protection of that glass for years to come,” she told The Reporter.

The rehabilitation is being done by Jane Walsh from Coastal Art Glass in Norwell. Once the window work is completed, the next phases of the project will include landscaping around the Columbia Road entrance and revitalizing the garden around the statue of St. Mary.

“Dorchester deserves its buildings and structures to be beautiful. This is certainly part of that. Whether or not you step foot inside the church, you can witness that from the outside,” Essaibi George said.

She added: “The location of the church is in many ways a gateway into the Dorchester community and so it’s something that welcomes others. It’s a landmark, but also a visual representation of what is a beautiful community.”

Those who attend the fundraiser can dance to the beats of a live DJ, participate in raffles, and catch up with old friends.
