Suffolk County prosecutors will bring charges against a 16-year-old juvenile from Braintree next month for a May assault that left another teenager with severe injuries to his face.

The suspect— whose name has been withheld due to his age— was arraigned in a Dorchester courtroom last week, according to a statement from Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden. He faces one charge of assault and battery causing serious injury.

Hayden’s office said the assault happened inside the state-owned park on May 10 around 8:30 p.m.

The victim’s mother, who reported the incident the next morning, told Boston Police that her son “had gone to the park to hang out and drink with his friends. During the gathering, the accused juvenile became upset when his ex-girlfriend showed interest in the victim.”

The suspect is alleged to have punched the victim in the face, causing him to hit his head and get knocked unconscious.

“The victim said he heard ringing in his ears and was awoken by the juvenile on top of him and punching his face and chest,” said a DA report. “Others in the gathering observed a large amount of blood on the ground. One called the victim’s mother and she drove her son to Boston’s Children’s Hospital.”

“The victim sustained multiple facial injuries, including several fractures and permanent damage to his teeth, requiring numerous surgeries, including reconstruction of his jaw,” prosecutors said.

The accused is due back in court on Aug. 27. He’s been released on personal recognizance and “ordered him to stay away from and have no contact with the victim.”
