Neighbors are planning a day-long block party along Pleasant Street for this Saturday (Sept. 6) with the street closed to vehicles from Trescott to Stoughton streets from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Chief organizer Piter Brandao said the gathering of neighbors from multiple side streets has blossomed into an end-of-summer tradition with the support of local civic groups.
Hundreds are expected to attend, said Brandao, who has lived on Pleasant Street for many years and has owned Pleasant Entertainment – a party rental company – since 2014.
He says a smaller block party on Trescott Street he attended years ago motivated him to dream bigger.
“I always wanted to shut down Pleasant Street after I saw that party,” he said. “I always applied for Pleasant Street, but they would deny me. The answer would always be about it being a main street and we couldn’t block it off.
Last year, he got additional support from the Columbia-Savin Hill Civic and the Jones Hill Civic associations.
“The idea is to bring the entire neighborhood together because we are a very diverse neighborhood from Savin Hill to Dorchester Avenue to Pleasant Street and Columbia Road,” he said. “It’s also one day I don’t let anyone monetize anything. There’s no money exchanged outside the raffle. Everything is free.”
The event includes games, catered food, bouncy houses, a foam machine, live music and much more.
Sponsors include Adam Sarbaugh at Cornerstone Real Estate, among others. Raffle proceeds will benefit the youth mentoring program ‘One of 100.’
