Editorial— The depravity of this president

Donald Trump is a rotten person.

It’s that simple and, for many of us, it’s been plain since day one: He’s no good.

His reaction to the murders of Hollywood filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michelle, apparently at the hands of their own son, offers the latest reminder of his extreme narcissism and outright cruelty.

So bereft of common decency is this man that his reaction to a tragic double-homicide was to issue a deranged statement that defamed the victims and inserted himself into their demise. It was grotesque. The next day, when challenged about the offense, he doubled-down and essentially approved of their killings.

How depraved and sick must one be to literally luxuriate in the slaughter of others?

And how numb have we become that so many choose to merely shake their heads and keep it moving to the next topic, the next outrage from this lunatic?

Some might feel that it’s a waste of our breath and time to register our outrage at this repeat offender, who is constantly insulting whole groups of people and individuals. Prior to slandering the slain Reiners, he was hurling hateful slurs against Somalians, who’ve joined Haitians and other Black immigrants as his favored targets for racist rants in recent weeks.

It’s a well-documented fact that Trump is a vile and committed racist and so, perhaps, some have seen fit to relent on the matter and turn to more recent disgusting acts, like cheering on the murders of his political foes.

It’s a mistake, folks, to ignore this president’s awful behavior. It will only enable him further and inoculate his cowardly sycophants.

We cannot normalize his outrageous acts and utterances simply because it’s what he normally does. Trump must be ostracized and condemned— and his proxies who continue to prop up his nonsense should be dealt the same treatment.

That’s one reason it was so disheartening to see one Zohran Mamdani play sidekick to Trump in the Oval Office last month. The next mayor of New York may not care that this president has personally insulted him repeatedly. But he should care that he is constantly targeting his immigrant constituents with dangerous, hate-filled rhetoric that could well propel his deranged red-hatted mob to violence.

It’s not okay to reward demagoguery with appeasement. The appropriate response is derision, condemnation, and a refusal to engage with someone who acts so reprehensibly.

Democrats—and really anyone with a pulse and a conscience—should seek to invoke the 25th Amendment and remove Donald Trump from office. Americans deserve better than a vile, craven president who mocks the murders of other Americans and dances on their graves. It’s shameful behavior and those who have stopped calling it out— or who collaborate with those who enable it— should be ashamed themselves.
