The Neponset River Watershed Association will host its annual Neponset Day celebration on Sat., Aug. 1, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at DCR’s Neponset II Park in Dorchester.

The free, family-friendly festival will feature canoeing and kayaking on the Neponset River, with boats provided through Paddle Boston, along with food trucks, live music, children’s activities, environmental exhibits, and other attractions.

The event offers residents a chance to experience a stretch of the river that has become an increasingly popular recreational destination. At last year’s celebration, hundreds of families, neighbors, and river advocates gathered near Pope John Paul II Park to paddle, picnic, and take part in children’s activities.
Attractions included a Boston Fire Department truck, face painting, lawn games, crafts, and a fly-fishing demonstration by the Greater Boston Chapter of Trout Unlimited.

The annual gathering also showcases the public parks, trails, canoe launches, and restored natural areas along the Neponset River Greenway. The corridor has been transformed over several decades from a largely industrial and inaccessible waterfront into a network of parks and paths connecting Dorchester, Mattapan, Hyde Park, and Milton.

Organizers encourage visitors to bring a blanket or picnic and spend time along the river. Parking at Neponset II Park is limited, with additional space available nearby. The site is also accessible from the Mattapan trolley’s Cedar Grove station and by MBTA bus.

A rain date is scheduled for Sun., Aug. 2.
