Education Program..

Education Program

The Education program at the Club is up and running, offering Homework Help to members of all ages four afternoons a week. For our members ages 6 to 12 the Education Center is open from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. on a Monday to Thursday schedule while our teen members receive assistance right in the Teen Center from 3:00 – 5:00 p.m. Staff are on hand to provide assistance at both sites. Other programs being offered this Fall include One-to-One Tutoring, Pico Crickets, KidzLit, Mad Scientists and College Bound. The One-to-One Tutoring program matches a member with a volunteer with weekly sessions scheduled. Please note that pre-registration is required and spots are limited. Pico Crickets will be offered to our teen members on Thursday evenings and the program combines electrical engineering with fun games. Kidzlit is our Literacy program for members ages 6 to 12 and will meet weekly. The program encourages members to read both at the Club and at home. Mad Scientists teaches members about the many facets of science in an interactive setting. Lastly, our College Bound program is a series activities offered throughout the year to assist our High School age members with the college selection and application process. Currently we are offering an on-line S.A.T. Prep course and have reserved Tuesday evenings for one-on-one time with a school placement counselor. For more information on any of our Education programs please contact Emily Capurso at ext. 2320.

After-School Jobs Program

The Boys and Girls Club is pleased to once again partner with Mayor Thomas M. Menino and the Boston Youth Fund to offer a limited number of after-school jobs for teens ages 15 to 18. Interested teens must stop by the Club and pick up an application and take part in a quick interview. Please note that the spots are limited and not every candidate will be offered a position. These positions will assist Program Directors throughout our three facilities. For more information please contact VP of Programming, Mike Joyce at ext. 2110.

Teen Program News

The Teen Program provides after-school programming from 3:00 – 8:45 p.m. on a Monday through Friday schedule in our Paul R. McLaughlin Youth Center site. Each afternoon teens can take part in drop-in activities, tournaments and utilize the computer lab. There are also small group activities such as the Girls Group, Boys Group, Cooking Club and our new Teen Magazine Club. These groups will meet weekly throughout the Fall and require pre-registration. Other activities include Movie Night on Fridays, Field Trips and the Career Prep Jobs program. In addition to these groups we also offer a Keystone Club, a leadership development group club for 14-18 year old members. This group recently completed a service project at Cradles for Crayons and will be volunteering at the Rodman Ride for Kids this coming weekend. Members will also be inducting new members into the group and hold elections for officers for the current school-year. For information on the Teen program please contact Tome’ Andrade at ext. 1422.

Smile Initiative to Return

After holding registration this past Saturday, the Smile Initiative will return to the Club on October 20th and 21st to provide on-site dental care to eligible members. After initial visits in July and August that saw over 40 members receive services, the program will return for those members taking part in our school year program. The Smile Initiative aims to increase the availability of oral health services for youth so they may avoid costly services down the road. The program partners with youth-serving agencies to capture the participating youth. To participate, parents must fill out an application with representatives from the Smile Initiative processing the paperwork with the respective health care provider. For more information, or to obtain an application, please contact Social Recreation Director, Vanusa Gomes at (617) 288-7120, ext. 2121.
