Annual Women’s Leadership Awards Dinner



Last Thursday, the Boys and Girls Clubs of Dorchester hosted over 500 club members and guests at the 18th Annual New England Women’s Leadership Awards Dinner at the World Trade Center. We congratulate the following women who were recognized at the event: Circle of Giving Award – Karen Keating Ansara, Haiti Relief & Reconstruction Fund, The Ansara Family Fund; Leadership Award – Sr. Margaret A. Leonard, LSA, Executive Director, Project Hope; Community Spirit Award – Lyndia Downie, President and Executive Director, Pine Street Inn; Pioneer Award – Ruth Bramson, CEO, Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts; and Courage Award – Magdalen Bish, Founder, The Molly Bish Foundation and Life “Guard” Center. The five award winners were presented their awards by Club members: Marissa Sneed, Aisling Kerr, Anice Branda, Christina Pienton and Regina Crawford, while Keila Centeio served as the Keynote Speaker. Intermediate/Senior Basketball League

At the half-way point of regular season play in the 10-team Intermediate/Senior Basketball League teams in both divisions are jockeying for the top play-off positions. In the 6-team Senior division Duke is all alone in first place at 5-1 followed by Michigan at 4-1, N.C. State at 2-1, Syracuse at 2-2 and the tandem of Baylor and California at 0-4. In the 4-team Intermediate division Boston College is all alone in first place at 4-1 followed by Georgia Tech at 3-1, U.N.C. at 3-2, and Stanford at 0-6. This past week there were 6 games played over three days. On Tuesday, the first of two games saw Michigan get by California 52-49. Michigan was led by Tyrik Jackson (18) while the tandem of Hollister Elliot (20) and Trey Gomes (20) led California. In the second game it was Syracuse, behind Malik James (14) defeating Baylor by a score of 56-44. The duo of Bernard Barbosa (9) and Ryan Roach (9) led the Baylor. On Friday a single game was held with U.N.C. holding off Stanford 76-58. Francis DePina (26) led U.N.C. while Junior Monteiro (15) led Stanford. On Saturday, the first of three games saw Georgia Tech use a balanced scoring attack to defeat Stanford 64-35. Trei Fernandes (18) led the way for Georgia Tech while Stanford was led by Malik James (18). In the second game N.C. State bested Duke 77-61. Rayshaw Matthews (22) led N.C. State while Paul Lewis (21) led Duke. In the final game Michigan held off a late rally by Baylor to pull out a 71-69 victory. Michigan was led by Michael Montrond (20) while Baylor was led by A.J. Summer Program Registration

We are pleased to announce that registrations for the summer program for members ages 6 to 12 will be accepted beginning Tuesday, June 1st at 9:00 a.m. The program will remain a “drop-in” program, meaning members are free to leave the facility at any time during the program. However, each child taking part in the summer program (ages 8 to 12 only) will need to arrive at our facility no later than 9:30 a.m. each the day the program is in operation. Members ages 8 to 12 can attend from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. while our 6 & 7 year old members can choose from a 9:00 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. morning session or a 1:00 p.m. – 4:15 p.m. afternoon session. Please note that no registrations will be accepted before the June 1st date. For parents interested in our Denney Center Unit we would like to remind you that there will be a maximum of forty slots available for non-residents of the Harbor Point community. Registration for the Denney Center’s Summer program began on May 3rd and will continue until all spots have been filled. Please note that there is no registration fee to participate in the summer program provided you have an active membership.
