Music Clubhouse Grand Opening

This past Thursday State Representative, Martin Walsh and City Councilor, Maureen Feeney joined Board Chair, Maureen Peterson and President & CEO, Bob Scannell in welcoming over 100 guests at the Grand Opening of the new Music Clubhouse located within the Paul R. McLaughlin Youth Center Unit of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Dorchester. Program partners – Jim McCoy, Director of Community and Government Relations at Berklee College of Music and Joan and Gary Eichorn of the Music and Youth Initiative were also on hand to help usher in the latest program partnership within the Club. The new Music Clubhouse provides dedicated space to a program which is expected to double in size. Within the new space members ages 10 and older will receive one-to-one and small group instruction in keyboards, drums, guitar, voice and more. There will also be opportunity for drop-in sessions as well as time in the new recording studio and music production room. Many thanks to our partners who assisted with the renovation of space including the Amelia Peabody Foundation, Charles Hayden Foundation and the City of Boston Department of Neighborhood Development. Marr-lin Swim Team Travels to Waltham Boys & Girls Club

The Marr-lin Swim Team traveled to the Waltham Boys and Girls Club for their first dual-meet of the regular season. Facing one of the top teams in the N.E.N.E.A.P.C. League, the Marr-lins were able to take four of the five age groups. The final totals from each age group were as follows: 8 & under – 50 to 18 Waltham; 10 & under – 47 to 15 Marr-lins; 12 & under – 46 to 27 Marr-lins; 14 & under – 37 to 15 Marr-lins and 17 & under – 39 to 17 Marr-lins. After practicing for nearly a month it was time for our newest swimmers to shine. Some of the highlights from our new team members include the following 8 & under swimmers: Pennie Sullivan (100 yd. I.M. 2:20.81 & 25 yd. Backstroke 31.68), Sydney Denver (25 yd. Freestyle 41.50 & 25 yd. Backstroke 47.50), William Sobchuk (25 yd. Freestyle 30.50 & 25 yd. Backstroke 32.97), Audra Garvey (50 yd. Freestyle 1:04.81 & 25 yd. Breaststroke 47.06) and Sachi Vicente (50 yd. Freestyle 1:12.61 & 25 yd. Breaststroke 45.97). Top times for new swimmers in the 10 & under age group include: Carlos Serrano (50 yd. Freestyle 1:22.16 & 50 yd. Backstroke 1:20.09), Romelo Nunez (50 yd. Freestyle 56.17 & 50 yd. Breaststroke 1:25.34), Caitlyn O’Connor (50 yd. Butterfly 1:18.19 & 100 yd. Freestyle 2:18.38) and Abigayle Crisman (50 yd. Butterfly 1:30.88 & 50 yd. Breaststroke 1:20.00). Strong showings within our three oldest age groups include: Benjamin Gomes (50 yd. Freestyle 1:05.09 & 50 yd. Backstroke 1:25.59), Jack Sobchuk (100 yd. Freestyle 1:52.19 & 50 yd. Breaststroke 1:03.81), Jessica Hernandez (100 yd. Freestyle 1:44.56 & 50 yd. Backstroke 1:07.41), Emily Suslowicz (100 yd. Freestyle 1:38.25 & 50 yd. Breaststroke 1:04.81) and Madison Connolly (50 yd. Freestyle 33.47 & 100 yd. Freestyle 1:17.47). Congratulations to these new swimmers on their strong showing. The Marr-lins will continue their dual-meet schedule with an upcoming meet against the Taunton Boys and Girls Club (11/14) followed by the Annual Swim-a-thon fundraiser (11/21). All-Star Floor Hockey Program

The two All-Star Floor Hockey teams at the Club are both enjoying successful seasons as they reach the half-way point in their attempt to repeat as respective league champions in 2009. The Boys 13 & under team moved to 4-0 on the season with a 8-2 win over the Salem, MA Club this past week. Leading the offense were Zelito Pina (3 goals), Sam Mastrogiacomo (3 goals), William McMahon (1 goal) and Junior Monteiro (1 goal). Next up for the Boys will be a game against the visiting South Boston Club. The Girls team also improved to 4-0 with a 10-5 win over the John M. Barry Club of Newton. The offense was led by Cadejia Matthews (4 goals), Natalie O’Donovan (2 goals), Khalilah Evora (2 goals) and Jessica Teixeira (2 goals). The regular season schedule continues this week with a game on the road at the Charlestown Club.
