Boys & Girls Club to Host 21st Year of Safe Summer Streets

For the 21st consecutive summer the Club will be expanding summer hours during July and August for our teen membership. The Safe Summer Streets program, begun in 1990, will keep the Club open from 5:00 p.m. to 10:45 p.m. on a Monday through Saturday schedule beginning Tuesday, July 6th. Program offerings as part of Safe Summer Streets include: the 16-team Basketball League, Summer Swim Team, Open Gyms, Open Swims, the Career Prep Summer Jobs program and Field Trips to name a few. The seven-week on-site program will also include small group club activities, community service projects and limited transportation each evening. Some of the special events planned include the Color War Event (7/9), ), the Keystone Club’s “Opportunity for Community” Day (7/10), Family Fun Night (7/15), Junior Class Night (7/27), Career Fair (7/28) College Alumni Night (8/4), Camp Old Navy (8/5), and the Semi-Formal Dance (8/18). The summer program will conclude with two off-site activities – Camp Northbound for 150 Club members in Maine the week of August 23rd and our Annual 5-day Disney for Kids trip with a group of 125 the week of August 30th. The Safe Summer Streets program is open to all teens in the community age 13 to 18 who are registered members of the Boys and Girls Club. If you are currently not a member all you will need to do is stop by any one of our three locations, pick up an application, pay a $5 membership fee and provide proof of age. You will then have a one-year membership. Please note that this program extends to our teen members located in the Harbor Point community of Dorchester who attend our Walter Denney Youth Center Unit. Transportation from the Denney Center will be provided to all teens looking to take part in activities. We strongly encourage you to spend your summer vacation meeting new friends and participating in any of the activities listed above. Intermediate/Senior Basketball League

With regular season play concluded, teams are now looking forward to the post-season tournament in the 10-team I/S Basketball League. In the six-team Senior division it is Michigan in first place with an 8-2 record followed closely by N.C. State, Syracuse and Duke at 6-4, California at 3-7 and Baylor at 1-9. In the 4-team Intermediate division it is Boston College in the lead at 9-1 followed by Georgia Tech at 7-3, U.N.C. at 4-6 and Stanford at 0-10. In games from the past week it was California, behind the offense of Nicholas Simpson (23) defeating Michigan 72-66. Dwayne Harper (26) led Michigan. In the second game of Tuesday’s double-header it was Boston College defeating Georgia Tech 69-64. Rayshaw Matthews (24) led Boston College while Kaylab Silva (28) led Georgia Tech. On Thursday the first of two games saw N.C. State hold off Syracuse 63-55. Kenny Ribeiro (11) and Joao Fernandes (15) led N.C. State and Syracuse respectively. In the second game California defeated Baylor 54-46. Jonge DaSilva (16) led California while Eduardo DeLeon (19) led Baylor. On Saturday morning, the opener of a two-game set saw U.N.C. defeat Stanford by a score of 58-55. Philip Lodge (19) led U.N.C. while Stanford was led by Jordan Williams (20). In the later game it was Michigan defeating N.C. State 81-74. Michael Montrond (28) led Michigan while N.C. State was led by Rayshaw Matthews (35). The play-off tournament will begin on 6/8 and will conclude with a best-of-three championship series for both divisions on 6/15, 6/17 and 6/19. Boys & Girls Club to Host Annual Recognition Night

The Club is pleased to announce that the Annual Member Recognition Night will be held on Thursday, June 24th with dinner at 6:00 followed by the awards ceremony at 6:30. The Recognition Night is the highlight of the program year and a chance to recognize participation and achievement in all of the Club’s program areas. On this night members and their parents can look forward to the presentations of the prestigious Youth of the Year Awards, Program Director Awards and many individual program awards. Invitations will be mailed to all of the award winners and their families. Parents will need to purchase their seats ($3 per person) in advance which will be accepted on a first come first serve basis until capacity has been reached. Please note that reservations will not be accepted over the phone and that the Recognition Night spots will fill fast.
