As we near the half-way point of regular season play in the 10-team Intermediate/Senior Basketball League, teams in both divisions are jockeying for the top spots in their respective league standings. This past week there were 8 games played over three days. On Tuesday, the first of two games saw Georgia Tech get by Stanford 47-43. Georgia Tech was led by Noah Moore (14) while Saide Smith (10) led Stanford. In the second game it was Boston College, behind Tyrell Joseph (19) defeating U.N.C. by a score of 61-52. Francis DePina(18) led the U.N.C. offense. On Thursday the opener saw Kentucky hold off UConn in overtime, 69-68. Bernard Barbosa (22) led Kentucky while Ronnie Jackson (23) led a balanced Georgia Tech attack. In the late game it was Stanford edging Boston College 57-56. Jerry Lopes (18) and Ralph Jean-Baptiste (25) led Stanford and Boston College respectively. On Saturday, the first of four games saw California squeak by N.C. State 66-65. Stanley Harris (17) led the way for California while N.C. State was led by Rayshaw Matthews (27). In the second game UConn bested Michigan 62-56. Ronnie Jackson(13) led UConn while Marcus Campbell (20) led Michigan. In the third game of the afternoon Georgia Tech defeated Boston College by a score of 50-48. Kevin Melville (14) and Ralph Jean-Baptiste (14) led Georgia Tech and Boston College respectively. In the final game Stanford held off U.N.C. to pull out a 61-54 victory. Stanford was led by Jerry Lopes (15) while U.N.C. was led by Francis DePina (21). Players from both divisions will soon be filling out their All-Star ballots for the Jamboree on 5/19 which will feature All-Star games against Clubs from the region, a 3-pt. shoot-out and other contests. This year the players will choose the starting five while the coaches will choose the reserves that will fill out each division’s roster. Denney Center Unit News
Our Walter Denney Youth Center Unit, located in the Harbor Point Housing community, has several special events approaching. In addition to the registration for the 7-week summer program, which began on 5/1, we will be hosting a teen trip to Roller Skating (5/4), taking members of the Philosophy Club to the closing debate on Boston Common (5/9), walking in the Mother’s Walk for Peace (5/13), hosting the Parents Forum (5/14), offer a 3-day Retreat to Cape Cod (5/18 to 5/20), host the Munch & Mingle (5/24) and invite members, parents and community members to our Spring Fair (5/25). These special events are in addition to ongoing activities such as U-Mass Tutoring, McCormack Gym, Patriot’s Kids Café, Art Classes and much more. Please note that the drop-in Summer program has a limited number of spots for non-residents of the Harbor Point community. “Learn To” Programming for Tots
The Club is in the midst of the 4th session of our “Learn To” programming for 3-5 year olds. The current session of classes takes place on weekday afternoons and Saturday mornings. We are offering programs in many of our core program areas including Athletics (Learn To Sports and Soccer), Aquatics (Swim Lessons and Family Swim), Fine Arts (Art for Me), Music (Music Exploration), and Education (Mini-Mad Science, Pirates & Princesses – Literacy). Registration is ongoing and the current session of classes will run through June. Please note that there is a $35 fee for each 8-week session of classes. Prior to registering you will need to fill out a membership application for each child. Aquatic Program News
The 6-team Intramural Swim League kicked off this past week. The league is made up of members of the Marr-lin Swim Team, graduates from the Lesson program and recreational swimmers. The program, which is open to members 5 to 18, offers weekday practices and team meets on Saturday afternoons. For those interested in the Swim Lesson program (ages 3 to 18) we will be running the current session through the middle of June with available openings during our weekday afternoon classes. Lastly, for those teens interested in becoming a Lifeguard, a new Class will begin on 5/4 with pre-registration required.
