Intermediate/Senior Basketball League
There are three more weeks of regular season play remaining in the 10-team Intermediate/Senior Basketball League with teams in both divisions jockeying for play-off positions. In the 6-team Senior division Michigan is all alone in first place at 5-2 followed by the tandem of Baylor and N.C. State at 4-2, Duke at 4-3, Syracuse at 2-4 and California at 0-6. In the 4-team Intermediate division Boston College is all alone in first place at 5-0 followed by Georgia Tech at 2-2, Stanford at 2-3 and U.N.C. at 0-4.
This past week there were six games played over three days. On Tuesday, the first of two All-Star games saw the East Stars of the Intermediate Division get by the West Stars 68-67. The East Stars were led by Eduardo DeLeon (18) while Trey Gomes (23) led the West Stars. In the second game it was the West Stars, behind Michael Montrond (22) capturing the Senior All-Star Game by a score of 78-71. Hollister Elliot (21) led the East Stars.
On Thursday the early game saw Syracuse hold off California 59-53. Joao Fernandes (18) led Syracuse while the tandem of Jarris Charley (13) and Hollister Elliot (13) led California. In the late game Michigan used a balanced scoring attack to defeat Baylor 59-50. Michael Montrond (16) led the way for Michigan while Baylor was led by the duo of Donny Whalen (16) and Shaun Roach (16). The action returned on Saturday with Georgia Tech besting Stanford in the opener 60-56. Trey Gomes (22) led Georgia Tech while Ronnie Jackson (23) led Stanford. In the second game N.C. State converted a last second basket to defeat Duke 65-64. N.C. State was led by Brendan MacDonald (23) while Duke was led by Tyrell Pugh (25). Summer Program Registration
We are pleased to announce that registrations for the summer program for members ages 6 to 12 will be accepted beginning Monday, June 1 at 9 a.m. The program will remain a “drop-in†program, meaning members are free to leave the facility at any time during the program. However, each child taking part in the summer program (ages 8 to 12 only) will need to arrive at our facility no later than 10 a.m. each the day the program is in operation. Members ages 8 to 12 can attend from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. while our 6 & 7 year old members can choose from a 9 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. morning session or a 1 p.m. – 4:15 p.m. afternoon session. Please note that no registrations will be accepted before the June 1st date.
For parents interested in our Denney Center Unit we would like to remind you that there will be a maximum of forty slots available for non-residents of the Harbor Point community. Registration for the Denney Center’s Summer program began on May 11 and will continue until all spots have been filled. Please note that there is no registration fee to participate in the summer program provided you have an active membership. Education Program News
Although the school year is nearing an end the Education department at the Club will continue to offer Homework Help (Monday – Thursdays) and weekly One-to-One Tutoring sessions right up through the 3rd week in June. In addition, we also offer several small group programs for members to take part in including KidzLit, Mindstorm Engineers and our Friday afternoon line-up of Bingo, C.S.I. Investigators and Legos/Kinex. Kidzlit is our reading enhancement program which meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:30 while Mindstorm Engineers meets on Wednesdays at 6. The Friday activities take over for Homework Help and allow the members to have fun and learn at the same time. For our High School students we will be taking 10 members of the Junior class to the Los Amigos Higher Education Conference at Bentley College from May 29 to 31. There will be over 125 Boys and Girls Club members from all over the Northeast taking part in the Conference which helps prepare students for the college admissions process and student life once they arrive.
