Intramural Floor Hockey Program Begins
The 18-team Intramural Floor Hockey program completed week number two of the regular season with nine games played during the past week. In the 10 & under Boys division, which plays games on Thursday afternoons, the opener saw the Maple Leafs defeat the Avalanche in overtime, 4-3. Eion Gormley (4 goals) provided the offense for the Maple Leafs while Colin Craddock (3 goals) led the Avalanche attack. In the second game the Red Wings, behind Kevin Zarnoch (2 goals), Michael Kerr (2 goals), Sean Dykens (1 goal) and Tahron Allen (1 goal) defeated the Whalers 6-0. In the third game Oliver Culliton (2 goals), Jared McLeod (1 goal) and Nicholas Clements (1 goal) propelled the Sabres to a 4-1 win over the Sharks. Leading the offense for the Sharks was Pedro Tavares (1 goal). On Friday afternoon the Girls 10 & under division took the floor with the North Stars, behind the offense of Jada Duarte (1 goal), Michana Smith (1 goal) and Tyalie Campbell (1 goal) defeating the Oilers 3-1. Leading the Oilers attack was Molly O’Halloran (1 goal). In the second game the Black Hawks looked in top form as they defeated the Bruins by a score of 5-3. Micha Smith (3 goals), Kate McGrath (1 goal) and Thalia Cruz (1 goal) provided the scoring for the Black Hawks while Sachi Vicente (3 goals) supplied the scoring for the Bruins. Later that same evening the Girls 18 & under division held two games. In the first game the Devils bested the Flames by a score of 6-5. Aisling Kerr (4 goals) and Cadejia Matthews (2 goals) handled the scoring for the Devils while Noreen Walsh (5 goals) led the Flames attack. In the second game the Lightning defeated the Blues 9-3. Jessica Tavares (5 goals), Rebecca McNealy (2 goals) and Tayla Duarte (2 goals) led the Lightning while the Blues were led by Jennifer Tavares (2 goals) and Khalilah Evora (1 goal). The week closed out with two games in the Boys 14 & under division. In the opener the Canadiens got by the Capitals 9-3. Sam Mastrogiacomo (6 goals), Nick Mastrogiacomo (2 goals) and Will McMahon (1 goal) led the Canadiens while the Capitals were led by Cedric Correia (2 goals) and Emoni Vicente (1 goal). In the second game the Flyers, behind Romelo Lewis (2 goals), Walter Dew-Hollis (2 goals), Joshua Herron (1 goal), Danny Lopes (1 goal), Robert Lawless (1 goal) and Edison Vazquez (1 goal) defeated the Islanders 8-5. The Islanders were led by Isaac Butler (2 goals), Le-Zhan DosSantos (2 goals) and Saide Smith (1 goal). In addition to our 4 Intramural Leagues the Club has also entered two teams into the N.E.N.E.A.P.C. league of Boys and Girls Clubs. The Girls 14 & under team will open regular season play this week when they host the Waltham Boys and Girls Club. Our Boys 13 & under team will kick-off their season when they host the Waltham Club on Wednesday. Boston Globe Community Care Day
On October 20th the Boys and Girls Club will team with volunteers from The Boston Globe to take part in their Annual Neighbor to Neighbor Day event. The Boston Globe, which reaches out to local non-profits in need of volunteer activities each Fall will return to the Club where last year they helped paint rooms in the Paul R. McLaughlin Clubhouse. This year volunteers from the company will take part in the event which will be spent painting the Pre-School Classroom in the Marr Clubhouse. We thank the employee volunteers for committing the time needed to complete this project and to The Boston Globe for their ongoing support of the Boys and Girls Club.
Education Program News
The Education program serves members ages 6 to 18 with academic enrichment activities as well as offering guidance for our High School students with the college selection and admissions process. Homework Help is offered after-school four days a week and members needing specialized assistance can register for One-to-One Tutoring. Please note that we are seeking volunteer tutors to be placed in weekly sessions with Club members. Current drop-in programs include Pico Crickets (engineering), KidzLit (literacy) and Scratch (computer video design). Upcoming activities within our College Bound series include a trip to a College Fair, an Essay Writing Workshop (10/14) and an on-line S.A.T. Prep Course.
