The Academy also gives members a chance to see what it is like to be a Police Officer and to meet officers from the local station. The week-long Academy is open to the first 9 members returning a signed permission slip and please note, there is no cost to participate. For additional information, or a permission slip, please contact Social Recreation Director, Vanusa Gomes at ext. 112.
Career Launch Program
Thanks to the support of several collaborating partners the Boys and Girls Club has placed approximately 120 members in summer employment positions at all three of our locations in 2009. With assistance from the Boston Youth Fund, Private Industry Council and John Hancock (M.L.K. Scholars Program) recommended teen members have been placed in positions of employment within the Boys and Girls Club. Selected members took part in the registration and orientation process in June and began working on July 6. These leadership positions, which assist the Club in operating programs for members 76 hours per week, also give the participants valuable work experience and a chance to build upon or create a resume. At the conclusion of the summer program selected participants will be invited to fill a limited amount of school-year positions. For more information on the various summer employment programs please contact Teen Director, Xiomara Alicea at ext. 122 or Program Director, Mike Joyce at ext. 142.
Summer Swim Team
After offering try-outs for new swimmers in June the Summer Swim Team began practicing three evenings a week in early July. The Summer Swim Team is open to boys and girls ages 6 to 18 who can swim a minimum of 50 yards. Practices are held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings with swimmers ages 11 & younger practicing at 6 p.m. and swimmers ages 12 and older practicing at 7 p.m. The team is made up of members of the school-year Marr-lin Swim Team, participants from the recently concluded Intramural Swim League and recreational swimmers from our summer program. Upcoming meets include the Blue/White Meet on July 23 and a tri-meet against the Waltham and Taunton Clubs on July 30. The season will conclude with a meet against the Watertown Club followed by a team barbecue on August 13. For more info please contact Aquatic Director, Aquiles Gomes at ext. 104.
On Tuesday, July 28, as part of the Safe Summer Streets program, we will hold a special event for our incoming Senior Class. This group of members will be invited to a workshop with Brian Murphy, Admissions Director at Stonehill College. The workshop will help the Senior Class prepare for this very important year, ensuring they are aware of all the steps needed to move their educational goals forward. We will review the application process, discuss the S.A.T. exams, financial aid, scholarships, visiting schools and more.
The workshop will be followed by an ice cream social for all participants. In September, this group will be invited back to the Club to meet with the Club’s Education Director to learn of the activities being offered within the College Bound program which will assist them during the process. For more information please contact Emily Capurso at (617) 288-7120, ext. 142.
