October Program Highlights
With Club members having returned to school and the Fall colors starting to settle in it looks like October is here and with it comes a variety of activities in all core program areas. In our Aquatic program we will kick-off the Fall session of Swim Lessons (ages 4–18) on 10/12. The members of the Marr-lin Swim Team will be practicing four nights a week in preparation for the start of their N.E.N.E.A.P.C. season opening dual-meet in November. In our Social Recreation program look for the start of our small group clubs including the Boys Group (10/4), the Torch Club (10/6), the Cooking Club (10/7) and the Girls Group (10/8). Upcoming field trips include Apple Picking (10/15), Pumpkin Picking (10/28) and attending the N.E.N.E.A.P.C. Bombardment Tournament in Stoneham (10/30). At the close of the month we will also host our Annual Halloween Party for members ages 6 to 12 (10/29). In our Athletic program the 18-team Intramural Floor Hockey program will begin this month with start dates for 10 & under Boys (9/30), 10 & under Girls (10/1), 18 & under Girls (10/1) and 14 & under Boys (10/2). Also starting up this month will be the Junior Flag Football League (10/2), Senior Flag Football League (10/4), Gymnastics (10/4) and the Judo Club (10/7). In addition, our two All-Star Floor Hockey teams will begin regular season play this month with home and away games against Boys and Girls Clubs from the region. At our Walter Denney Youth Center Unit located in Harbor Point we will be kicking off our tutoring program with Stonehill College (10/5), hosting Seniors and Teens from the community on an inter-generational Apple Picking trip (10/16) and beginning our U-Mass Tutoring program (10/18). Other events at the Denney Center include a Roller Skating trip (10/15), the Parents Forum (10/19), the Munch & Mingle (10/20), the Harbor Point Junior/Senior Class Night event (10/21), a trip to the Canobie Lake Fright-Fest (10/22) and our Halloween Party (10/29). In our Arts program our Fall Fine Arts classes will begin the week of 10/4. There will be a Cadet/Junior Class (ages 6-9) and a Junior Class (ages 10-12) for Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, and separate Girls Art/Boys Art classes. Evening classes, also beginning the week of 10/4, will include Beginner Photography, Drama Club, Model Making, Teen Arts Studio and Advanced Photography. Please note all of these classes require pre-registration. As for our Music program we are offering drop-in activities/instruction while also accepting registrations for our small group classes which are scheduled to begin the week of 10/4. Pre-registration is required to take part in the music lessons. Other program offerings within the Music Clubhouse include drop-in music, Instrument Training, American Idol, Great Performers Workshops and Rock Band. One of our ongoing programs is the Kids Café, which provides a hot, nutritious meal to members ages 6 to 12 weeknights at 5:00 p.m. Parents can register their children at any of our three service locations. We will hold our monthly Family Dinners on 10/20 (Denney Center Unit) and 10/21 (Marr Clubhouse). In our Teen program we will hold weekly meetings of the Cooking Club (Mondays) and the Boys Group (Thursdays). Other important dates include three Guest Speaker visits (10/6, 10/13 & 10/20), a trip to Dave & Buster’s (10/15), the monthly Munch & Mingle (10/21), a trip to the Canobie Lake Fright-Fest (10/22) and the Teen Halloween Party (10/28). Other Teen programs include the Keystone Club, our leadership development group club and the Career Prep program which places deserving teens in part-time employment positions throughout the Club to support Program Directors.
The Keystone Club will be inducting new members, electing officers for the coming year and beginning a service project by supporting younger members in the Homework Center. The Career Prep program will be accepting applications from deserving teens to fill a limited number of spots. Processing for those teens selected will take place on 10/27. Lastly, we have the Education program which offers Homework Help four afternoons a week as well as small group activities such as KidzLit (literacy), Pico Crickets (engineering), and Scratch Design (computer video design). Our One-to-One Tutoring program (pre-registration required) and I.S.E.E. Test Prep Class will continue through the month while special events include a trip to a local College Fair (10/13) and a College Essay Writing Workshop (10/14).
