October Program Highlights
With Club members fully engaged in school and the Fall weather starting to settle in it looks like October will bring with it a variety of activities in all core program areas. In our Aquatic program we will kick-off the Fall session of Swim Lessons on 10/5. The members of the Marr-lin Swim Team will be practicing four nights a week in preparation for the intra-squad Blue vs. White meet on 10/24 and the dual-meet season opener on 10/31 when the team will travel to the Watertown Boys and Girls Club. In our Social Recreation program look for a field trip to the Movies (10/2), the start of the Torch Club (10/5) and the kick-off of the Girls Group (10/8). Other upcoming events include the return of the Smile Initiative dental health program (10/20 & 10/21 – pre-registration required), attending the N.E.N.E.A.P.C. Bombardment Tournament in Stoneham (10/24) and our Annual Halloween Party (10/30). In our Athletic program the 18-team Intramural Floor Hockey program will begin this month with start dates for 10 & under Boys (10/1), 10 & under Girls (10/2), 18 & under Girls (10/2) and 14 & under Boys (10/3). Also starting up this month will be the Junior Flag Football League (10/3), Senior Flag Football League (10/5), Gymnastics (10/5) and the Judo Club (10/8). In addition, our three All-Star Floor Hockey teams will begin regular season play this month with home and away games against Boys and Girls Clubs from the region. At our Walter Denney Youth Center Unit located in Harbor Point we will be hosting an Open House (10/2) as well as kicking off our U-Mass Tutoring program (10/5), the Philosophy Club (10/7), Health & Fitness 910/13) and Stonehill Tutoring (10/20) programs. Other events at the Denney Center include the Munch & Mingle (10/21), Parents Forum (10/22) and our Halloween Party (10/30). In our Arts & Music program our Fall Fine Arts classes will begin the week of 10/5. There will be a Cadet/Junior Class (ages 6-9) and a Junior Class (ages 10-12) for Cartooning, Painting, Sculpture, Arts & Crafts and separate Girls Art/Boys Art classes. Evening classes, also beginning the week of 10/5, will include Beginner Photography, Drama Club, Graphic Design, Teen Arts Studio and Fashion Photography. Please note all of these classes require pre-registration. As for our Music component we are offering drop-in activities/instruction while also accepting registrations for our soon to start classes. Registration can be handled directly with Director, Alex Budrow. Other notable dates for the Music program include the start of the JazzBoston Riffs and Raps program (10/13) – a five week program that explores creativity and community through Jazz music and a field trip to Harmonix to learn how the fields of video and music come together for some of the most popular games being made today. One of our ongoing programs is the Kids Café, which provides a hot, nutritious meal to members ages 6 to 12 weeknights at 5:00 p.m. Parents can register their children at any of our three service locations. In our Teen program we will start the Boys Group (10/8), Girls Group (10/21) and Cooking Club (10/27) this month. Other important dates include a field trip to the Randolph Movie Theater (10/16), the monthly Munch & Mingle (10/28) and the Teen Halloween Party (10/29). Other Teen programs include the Keystone Club, our leadership development group club and the Career Prep program which places deserving teens in part-time employment positions throughout the Club to support Program Directors. Lastly, we have the Education program which will jump-start our small group activities such as KidzLit (literacy), Pico Crickets (engineering), Dough (finances) and Icky, Sticky Goo (science). Our Homework Help (drop-in) and One-to-One Tutoring programs will continue through the month while special events include the Daniel Marr, Jr. Catholic Schools Scholarships (10/7), a trip to the Children’s Museum (10/9), a trip to the Harvard Museum of Natural History (10/14) and College Tours of Boston College & Boston University (10/16) and Providence, Johnson & Wales and U.R.I.
