Summer Collaborators Provide Off-site Opportunities

The on-site Summer program at the Club was complimented by a number of special partners and friends who provided off-site opportunities for members of all ages. This summer, selected members were able to attend: the Dan Duquette Sports Academy (Yawkey Foundation); Irish Cultural Center Camp (American Ireland Fund); Shooting Touch Basketball Camp (Shooting Touch Program); Golf Camp (M.G.A. Links Program); Junior Police Academy, Mountain Biking & Tennis (Boston Police Department); Museum of Science and Puppet Showplace Theater (Associated Grantmakers of Massachusetts); Brockton Rox Game (Tom Gannon); Camp Old Navy (Old Navy – South Bay Mall); Sphere’s Program (M.I.T./N.A.S.A.); Math Olympics (Young People’s Project); and Land’s Sake Farm (Greater Boston Food Bank). In addition, our teen members took part in off-site community service activities with the Louis D. Brown Peace Curriculum, Community Servings, Cradles to Crayons and The Greater Boston Food Bank. Thanks to all of our partners for providing these special programming opportunities for our members.

Early Childhood Program To Host Family Fun Day
On September 3rd the Early Childhood Programs will hold their annual Family Fun Day. The program will celebrate the transition from preschool into Kindergarten for those children graduating as well as engage all of our families in fun activities.  Everyone will be invited to play in the moon bounce, take part in small group games, including literacy based activities and enjoy a light breakfast. The event will run from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Congratulations to all of the young participants. Currently, our programs have openings in the early childhood and after-school (ages 5 to 12) programs. Early Education and Care and School age program services are offered at all three of our sites: The Paul R. McLaughlin Youth Center, the Marr Clubhouse and the Walter Denney Youth Center located in Harbor Point. Please note that each of these programs accepts childcare vouchers. For more information, or to schedule an appointment and tour, please contact Vice President of Childcare Services, Mary Kinsella at ext. 2140.

Club Members To Attend 19th Annual Disney Trip
Thanks to the leadership of Don Rodman, a member of the Club’s Board of Directors, and to the many generous supporters of his annual fundraising effort, 110 club members will be attending Walt Disney World for a five-day, four-night trip at the end of August. This is the 19th year the trip has taken place and serves as a means to recognize outstanding participation, educational achievement, community service, sportsmanship and leadership within the Club, school and community. Trip stops will include the Magic Kingdom, Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure, Hollywood Studios and Blizzard Beach. Like past years, the trip will include several Dorchester youth agencies as we welcome back Boston Refugee Youth Enrichment, College Bound, Project D.E.E.P., the Leahy Holloran Community Center and Nativity Prep. Congratulations to all of the members selected to attend and thanks again to Don for making it all possible.

Summer Job Programs Conclude
In late August participants in our various employment positions through the Career Launch program will conclude their summer job experience. Thanks to our valued partnerships with the Boston Youth Fund, the Boston Private Industry Council and the Martin Luther King, Jr. Scholars program, teen members were placed in positions on-site at our three service locations. In all, over 110 teen members were part of the Career Launch program this summer. We offer a special thanks to all of the organizations who stepped forward to provide these positions for our deserving teen members. For teens seeking school-year positions within the Boys and Girls Club and the local business community, Club staff will be on hand to assist with resumes, applications and interviews during the Fall session of the Career Launch program. Look for classes to begin in September/October. For information on any of our upcoming Fall programs for teens please contact Teen Directors, Xiomara Alicea or Tome’ Andrade at 617-288-7120, ext. 1420.
