Summer Swim Team
With registrations currently being accepted, the Summer Swim Team will hold try-outs (50 yard swim) for new swimmers on 6/24 and 6/28 at 6:00 p.m. The Summer Swim Team is open to boys and girls ages 6 to 18 who can swim a minimum of 50 yards. Practices are held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings with swimmers ages 10 & younger practicing at 6:00 p.m. and swimmers ages 11 and older practicing at 7:00 p.m. The team is made up of members of the school-year Marr-lin Swim Team, participants from the recently concluded Intramural Swim League and recreational swimmers from our summer program. The team will host and travel to meets against local Boys and Girls Clubs and Town Swim Teams. The season will conclude with a meet and family barbecue on 8/11. Boys & Girls Club Summer Program
In addition to the 22nd season of Safe Summer Streets, which provides programming for 13-18 year old members from 5:00 – 11:00 p.m. six nights a week, the Club will offer an on-site, 7-week program for members ages 6 to 12. This program will operate on a 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. schedule (Monday to Friday) for 8-12 year olds and a half-day program (9:00 a.m.-12:15 p.m. or 1:00 p.m.-4:15 p.m.) for our 6 & 7 year old members. Session #1, which will begin on 7/5 is now full, but openings for session #2, which will run from 7/25 to 8/12 are still available. There is no cost to sign up for the summer program provided you have a current membership. The daytime program includes a breakfast and lunch component for all members as well as field trips, special events and a session concluding Olympics. The program will see participating members traveling through all core program areas each day. Registration forms are available at our McLaughlin Center reception desk. Intermediate/Senior Basketball League Championships
The 10-team Intermediate/Senior Basketball League (I/SBL) has completed the post-season tournament this past week crowning UConn and Boston College as the 2011 Senior and Intermediate division champions respectively. In the 4-team Intermediate division the semi-final games were held last Saturday. In the opener Boston College defeated U.N.C. followed by Georgia Tech defeating Stanford. This moved the two winners into the best of three championship series. In game one it was the duo of Ralph Jean-Baptiste (20) and A.J. Monteiro (20) leading the way for Boston College, capturing a 63-44 victory. Kaylab Silva (28) led the Georgia Tech attack. In the second game Georgia Tech was able to close the gap but still came up short 69-62. Jamari Jackson (17), Ralph Jean-Baptiste (14), Pedro Lopes (12), Lipi Fernandes (10), Devante Hall (10), A.J. Monteiro (4), Destinee Morris (2) and Andronique DosSantos led the offense for Boston College while Georgia Tech was led by Kaylab Silva (45), Danielson Correia (8), Joaquim Pires (7), Danny Lopes (2) and Jacorey Kindell. In the 6-team Senior division the first quarter-final game saw Michigan just get by N.C. State by a score of 84-82. Dwayne Harper (29) and Tyrik Jackson (26) led the Michigan offense while Rayshaw Matthews (30) and Tre Fernandes (24) led U.N.C. In the second quarter-final game Syracuse knocked out Duke 79-72. Philip Lodge (28) and Maurice Evans (26) led Syracuse while Kentucky was led by Eduardo DeLeon (44) and Bernard Barbosa (17). In the first of two semi-final games Michigan pulled off another close one, defeating California 72-71. Dwayne Harper (29) and Kevin Bernardez (15) led Michigan while Nick Simpson (31) and Jonge DaSilva (16) led California. In the later game it was UConn bumping off Syracuse 74-72. UConn was led by Tyrell Pugh (22) and Paul Lewis (22) while Philip Lodge (27) and Maurice Evans (22) led Syracuse. This set-up a UConn vs. Michigan championship series. In game one of the best of three championship it was Michigan, opening up a half-time lead and then holding on for a 66-53 victory. Dwayne Harper (18) led Michigan while Tyrell Pugh (20) led UConn. In the second game UConn rebounded to capture a hard-earned 61-57 victory. UConn was led by the tandem of Tyrell Pugh (22) and Daquan Hardy (14) while it was Kevin Bernardez (14) and Tyrik Jackson (14) leading the way for Michigan. In the decisive game three UConn held on to capture a 72-67 victory. For UConn it was Daquan Hardy (25) and Tyrell Pugh (25) leading the way while Tyrik Jackson (33) led Michigan. Congratulations to UConn and Boston College on their championship seasons.
