Congressman Michael Capuano said Friday morning he won’t be one of the Democrats jockeying to take on U.S. Sen. Scott Brown in 2012.
“After serious personal reflection, I have decided not to seek the United States Senate seat for Massachusetts at this time,” Capuano said in a statement. “There are several good candidates currently in the race and I am fully satisfied that any nominee from this group will represent Massachusetts effectively in the Senate. Thanks to everyone who has encouraged me to seek the Senate seat. I very much appreciate your support and your insight. I look forward to seeking re-election to the House in 2012.”
The move takes another potential candidate off the board and will likely free up any operatives who were waiting to hear from Capuano about his intentions.
Capuano, a Somerville Democrat, represents parts of Dorchester and Mattapan. He shares Dorchester with Congressman Stephen Lynch, a South Boston Democrat who is still publicly mulling whether to get into the race.
