On the cusp of Labor Day and with a potential Senate rival keynoting a high-profile union breakfast, Mayor Setti Warren touted his work with unions in Newton in a brief Friday afternoon sit-down with Reporter staff.
“I have a track record of working with unions in my own city,” Warren said on Friday, citing deals he struck with all 10 municipal unions in his city.
Mayor Warren, who announced his Senate run in May, also expressed support for expanded gambling as a job creation vehicle. Elizabeth Warren, a former Obama administration official who is widely expected to jump into the race, told the Boston Globe on Wednesday she opposes casinos.
Beacon Hill lawmakers are weighing legislation that will bring casinos to the Bay State, with debate expected to begin next week.
Elizabeth Warren is slated to give the keynote address at the Greater Boston Labor Council’s Labor Day breakfast on Monday.
Over 500 union members and elected officials will attend the event, which is set for 9 a.m. at the Park Plaza Hotel. Mayor Warren said he would be dropping by.
Mayor Warren is one of seven announced Democrats aiming to knock Republican Scott Brown off his US Senate perch.
On Friday morning, Congressman Michael Capuano said he would not be running for the seat. “He’s been a real fighter for families,” Warren said when asked for reaction. “I wish him well.”
“I believe this campaign is going to come down to who can make the best case against Scott Brown,” Mayor Warren said, pointing to his time as an Iraq War veteran, working for US Sen. John Kerry, and running the region’s Federal Emergency Management Agency.
