Tree falls on Train Street, knocks out power to nearby residents, traffic signals

Even without Earl, a tree fell on Train Street Thursday evening, taking out an electric line that supplied residents and nearby traffic signals.

Neponset’s Devine ice rink gets a new, natural look

The façade of Neponset’s Devine Ice Rink has a brand new look this summer that harkens back to the neighborhood’s not-too-distant past. A team of 10 young painters from the Mayor’s Mural Crew last month completed a colorful panoramic on the side of the state-owned facility on Morrissey Boulevard. The mural includes elements of present day Boston — the gas tank and the city skyline— alongside natural scenes that are still visible along parts of our coastline: salt marshes and egrets.  Read more

Become a Basic Literacy or ESOL Tutor

Literacy Volunteers of Massachusetts invites prospective volunteers to one of our informational orientations held August 16 and September 9 from 6-8 in downtown Boston. Volunteer tutors work one-to-one with students from communities throughout the Greater Boston area, including Dorchester and Mattapan, for 2-hours per week for a minimum of 9 to 12 months at mutually convenient times in public places. LVM trains volunteers to tutor adult learners in either Basic Literacy or English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL).  Read more

City Council passes Menino budget by 11-2 vote

The City Council on Wednesday voted 11-2 to pass Mayor Thomas Menino’s $2.3 billion budget for fiscal year 2011. Councillors also voted unanimously to pass a home rule petition – which requires approval from the mayor, the governor and the state Legislature – to hand library trustees the power to fundraise for the cash-strapped library system.  Read more

Neponset Health Center's Food Pantry is Open every Tuesday!

The Neponset Health Center's food pantry is open every Tuesday from 9 am-11 am. New clients only need to bring with them a valid I.D. and proof of some sort of state assistance (i.e MassHealth, SDI, DTA, Housing, etc). The Neponset Health Center Food Pantry is located in the health center on the first floor near the back parking lot.
